What is Co-operative Education?  


Co-operative Education is a learning partnership that provides students with valuable work experience while they are earning credits towards their graduation diploma. The Co-operative Education course prepares students for successful participation in the workplace, provides sufficient time and various opportunities at the placement to enable the student to apply and further develop their knowledge and skills.

How does Co-operative Education help students meet diploma requirements?

  • Students can earn credits toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) by taking Co-operative Education.

  • Co-operative Education credits may be used to meet up to two of the 18 compulsory credit requirements for the OSSD. 

  • Students must also earn 12 optional credits through the OSSD. There is no limit on the number of optional credits that may be earned through Co-operative Education courses.

What are the benefits of Co-operative Education?

Co-operative Education allows students to participate in valuable learning experiences that help prepare them for the next stage of their lives, whether in college, university, apprenticeship training or the workplace.

Benefits of Co-operative Education include:

  • Gaining practical work experience in areas that complement your personal strengths, interests and educational needs

  • Discovering new personal strengths and skills

  • Actively learning and thriving as a responsible team member in the “real world” 

  • Having a Co-op teacher facilitate entry into a workplace 

  • Confirming career decisions before starting post-secondary education, including apprenticeships

  • Establishing contacts in the workplace for networking opportunities and gain references for future employment

What kind of work can I do?

The type of work is completely up to you!  Students should consider their interests, future career aspirations, and are encouraged to be curious about the workplace.  This is your opportunity to test drive a career in a relatively low risk environment.

How can I apply for Co-op?

It’s as simple as selecting the course (DCO3O) on your Xello account during PF’s course selection period (this typically occurs in February).  At any other time of year, please see your Guidance counsellor.

 

Students can expect to participate in an interview with Mr. Bosco or Mrs. MacNeil to discuss readiness for the program, potential placement ideas, transportation arrangements, and connection to your Individual Pathway Plan.


Where can I find resources about Co-op?

  • Are you interested in doing a Co-op placement in a skilled trade? 
  • Want to earn credits for both your high school diploma and College degree/diploma at the same time? The Dual Credit Program might be an option for you. 

  • Through the Dual Credit Program, high school students have the opportunity to earn up to 4 dual credits by taking part in apprenticeship training and college courses. Students enrolled in the program can earn both high school and college credits upon successful course completion.
